Description

Lake Pedder in the distance from Scott’s Peak Road, South West National Park.

Lake Pedder takes it’s name from the original Lake Pedder which was flooded to create an Impoundment to feed Lake Gordon for the generation of electricity through the Strathgordon Dam. It was in many ways the birth of conservationalism in Australia and spawned the world’s first green party. While the campaign to save Lake Pedder was unsuccessful, it laid the basis of support for the later successful campaign to prevent the building of a dam on the Franklin River.

I have always been able to fire up my father by referring to the current Lake as Lake Pedder and things can get quite heated. He like many people would like to see the Lake restored to its former state and the Lake Pedder Restoration Committee continues that fight. I remember photos of the original lake and my grand parents standing on the stand of the beach by the Lake.
